Close your eyes and imagine all time is happening and once
and no time is happening at all.
Imagine someone is stealing your breath.
Everything is collapsing and you can’t keep up.
“What good is your reality?”
You are suspended.
You are just one moment and then you disappear.
*shouting* LET GO OF CONTROL
You do not exist.

Thembi Sodell created a piece entitled “Let Go of Control” for the 2 Minutes From Home” series of new music commissions, performed by the Decibel New Music Ensemble. Thembi talks to Decibel artistic director Cat Hope from regional Victoria, Australia.
Thembi Soddell is a sound artist and practice-based researcher known for their powerful acousmatic performances and installations in darkness. Their PhD research, ‘A Dense Mass of Indecipherable Fear: The Experiential (Non)Narration of Trauma and Madness through Acousmatic Sound’ (2019), developed a novel approach to understanding lived experiences of anxiety, depression, trauma and madness using a medium (abstract sound) with the unique ability to reflect the intangibility of the inner world. Thembi is the 2020 Regional Arts Victoria Fellow.
We previously commissioned a piece from Soddell back in 2014 titled ‘Your Sickness is Felt in my Body’ as part of our After Julia project.
