In an exciting collaboration, Decibel has commissioned new works from two of the most important living French composers in Europe, Eliane Radigue and Lionel Marchetti. Radigue, who was involved in the early music concrete experiments in France, now creates only acoustic works that build on the complexity of electronic music, redefining the nature of acoustic music in the process. Marchetti, as one of the leaders in the field, continues in his work with Decibel to explore the potential of the medium beyond the ‘sound object’ and into live performance. This cutting-edge concert features the first work by Eliane Radigue for an Australian ensemble, Occam Ocean Hexa II, co-signed with Carol Robinson, and works from Lionel Marchetti for instruments and concrete sounds. These are ‘Une Series de Reflets’ and a workc ommissioned by Decibel in 2012, ‘Premiere etude (le ombres). | Lionel Marchetti is a composer of musique concrète. First self-taught, he discovered the catalogue of Musique Concrète with Xavier Garcia. He has built his own recording studio, and composes also in the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM) in Paris since 1993. Lionel Marchetti also performs improvisation using microphones and loudspeakers, as a duo with Jérôme Noetinger, with the collective Le Cube with (Christophe Auger, Étienne Caire, Christophe Cardoen, Xavier Quérel, Jérôme Noetinger, Gaëlle Rouard) that performs live music and where films are shown and worked on interactively, and with the collective Archipel: Emmanuel Petit, Mathieu Werchowski, Sophie Agnel, Fabrice Charles, Pascal Battus. Since 1992, he organizes regular workshops centered on Radio and creation together with Olivier Capparos for France Culture. At the same time, he writes poetry, and develops theoretical thoughts on Musique concrète and the art of the loudspeaker. Eliane Radigue is renowned for her electronic music, in particular, with the ARP Synthesizer. Her compositions are defined by micro-events due to subtle overtone shifts that dance above a seemingly static tone. The result is profoundly moving. In 2005, Radigue began composing for acoustic instruments, first Naldjorlak, her grand trio for two basset horns and cello, and now the ever-expanding OCCAM OCEAN series. These new works have been highlighted in important festivals: Festival d’Automne in Paris, Huddersfield Contemporary, Angelica in Bologna, CTM.12 Spectral in Berlin, Crossing the Line in New York, Sound and Music in London, ISEA2010 Ruhr, E-May in Vienna, [K] HEUTE in Hamburg, Tectonics in Glasgow and Impact in Utrecht.  |
