Decibel new music ensemble have developed a new immersive performance experience for Inland Lake (le lac intérieur) – a 45-minute electroacoustic work composed in 2022 by French Composer Lionel Marchetti.
Be absorbed in the images and sound as they knit together in this unique music experience.
“Inland Lake offers a depth built from patience, scale and sensitivity. In the transformed hall, with smoke tinting the light and paper fluttering like skin, Decibel gave us less a concert than a slow act of looking and listening. By the time the sound fell away, the room itself seemed changed. Or perhaps it was us.” Cat Landro, XPress Magazine
The piece is written for ensemble and partition concrète – a fixed media component that acts simultaneously as score, ensemble member and sound track.
This work sits within an ‘acoustic ambient’ genre in which instruments weave in and out of the sound track, oscillating focus between the performers and the rich sound world radiating from multiple speakers in the space. Threading string, wind and percussion with more unusual instruments such as ocarinas, singing bowls and harmonicas, the concert provides a lush and imaginative listening and viewing experience.
Sohan Ariel Hayes’ projection design is built around the film by Karl Ockelford, made for the Room 40 CD release of Inland Lake in 2023. The concert will begin with Marchetti’s 2 Minutes from Home piece, La Patience, which also features a film by Karl Ockelford.
